   Did I understand this correctly? People are accused just with a CD that anyone can create? How long do these people have been in jail? Unbelievable.

     Well, there is also the recording of a military seminar meeting held in 2003 under the command of General Dogan that noone (including the defendants) question its authenticity. The prosecutors argue that the coup plans in the CDs were discussed in a concealed way in that meeting in which the military staff talk about bashing Istanbul, giving ultimatum to the government, even establishing a national consensus government. But these are pretty normal things in democracies, aren’t they? Nothing to worry about…

       These recordings are publicly available on youtube. Also in a TV program, when he was asked about these recordings, Cetin Dogan explains that these are for training purposes. By the way, if we are so concerned about democracy in Turkey, why Kenan Evren, who was the head of a real military coup in 12 September 1980, is still free and there is no trail for him and others responsible?

       So Mr, Smithson, it is unbelievable, but it is true.
       In Turkey nowadays people are put into jail; with fake CDs as main evidence, with telephone numbers recorded mistakenly in your cellular phone at the police station that you have never seen before, with messages that were sent to your PC with virus (and you have never seen). Nowadays, you are asked why you are writing news about these discrepancies in this trial.
       And true unfortunate is that some media and some ideology members are praising all these as a “road to democracy”. So there is a lot to worry in Turkey.

       and Dear Fmeraklı,
       You don’t have to worry, we know you. But, why you couldn’t give any reasonable answers about the fake CDs (or is it difficult to give some)? And why don’t you tell the person asking the question that prosecutors have not found anything illegal about the seminar? If the seminar recordings (and the wording you mentioned was enough), could you explain us a reasonable logic why someone has need to create a fake CD?

         Dramali Riza,

         I have been saying that if the prosecutors do not provide an acceptable explanation of the inconsistencies highlighted in this blog during the course of the trial, it will simply mean that the defendants’ right to fair trial would be violated. I am not the person who should give reasonable answers about the inconsistencies in the documents saved in the CDs, it is the prosecutors.

         It is also not right to say that the prosecutors did not find anything illegal about the seminar. They argue that the coup plans were discussed in the seminars in a concealed way. My personal opinion is that discussing about bashing Istanbul, trashing people, establishing a national consensus government etc. in a military seminar cannot be deemed legal. Even if you are not convinced that what being discussed in the 2003 seminar was related to a coup plan, you can at least say that the statements such as establishing a national consensus government is against the military penal code according to which army personnel are not allowed to make political statements. If you think that talking about a national consensus government or giving an ultimatum to the government has nothing to do with politics, that’s fine, but I won’t buy that argument. I should also mention that one of the defendants, the then Secretary of the 1st Army, stated to the prosecutors that “internal threats” can normally not be discussed in a military seminar.

       What Fmerakli is mentioning is actually only part of the truth. He left out these parts:

       By law, these plots are part of a war game, and thus, not directly subject to accusations of a coup plot. So, yes, there are such recordings, but at the end of the day:

       * yes, these people are directly accused of faked documents on a CD.

       * furthermore, the prosecutors have found out about these fallacies, and yet, hid them from the defendants. (Another hazard, of the Turkish democracy, isn’t it?)

       * when the lawyers asked for finding out the counter-evidence the prosecutors hid from them with the judges, they were rejected before they were finally granted these documents. However, to this day, the missing 700 pages of these documents are still missing. Nothing to worry about, right?

       And the cherry on the top: many people who continue this “democracy” etc rhetoric, which, ad nauseam, I am fed up of. Nothing to worry about?

         But in a war game, it is not possible to use the names of real persons or places etc., right? But we know from the recordings that it was not the case in the 2003 seminar. The army officers mention the names of Erdogan, several AKP members as well as certain mayors and public officers. For example, they talk about which mayors would be replaced with retired army officers. What a great democracy plan for Turkey, it was!

           By all means investigate the seminar, and punish any discussion that is against the law.

           Do read the FAQ, questions 10 and 11. There are 147 defendants that are not related to the seminar at all.

           Now people are placed in jail with fake and flimsy evidence, journalists are being apprehended because of more “digital evidence” and anonymous e-mails. What a great democracy we now have in Turkey.

           I concur with Can Acar on this. Nobody, including myself, says this is a sign of democracy, and it is ridiculous to claim so, and yet, there are many people who keep repeating that Turkey is advancing towards democracy even in the light of the current affairs. In fact, my malaise with this shallow rhetoric has well been re-expressed in the concerns raised by the European Parliament, almost verbatim to the categories I have set forth numerous times as problematic in the case of Turkey.

     Even though it is told that there exist the recordings of a military seminar as well, the prosecutor has brought indictments against these people by solely relying on ‘the’ CD as it is clearly mentioned in the pdf document above. Thanks to Pinar Dogan and Dani Rodrik now we all know that this CD is as fake as a three dollar bill and probably produced by a network embedded in different segments of state apparatus and media.

   My initial knee-jerk reaction was to wait and see if these might be cases that really need investigation considering Turkey’s history of military coups. However, with latest developments, the credibility of these cases are getting weaker and weaker. More and more people are being prosecuted and jailed based on speculations rather than strong evidences. Everyday within Turkey, it is becoming more clear that it is now a crime to support the seperation of state and religion. After months of following these cases, I believe your father Cetin Dogan is a victim of the process of changing modern secular Turkey into a religious sect.

         Sözde Balyoz davası konuşulmaya başladıktan sonra tanıdım.Daha önce tanımayı da çok isterdim.Sorduğum soruda ısrar ediyorum.Açıkla ben de öğrenmiş olayım.Fakat anladığım kadarıyla Dani bey ile ilgili bir kuyruk acın var.Merak ettim sana ne yaptı?

             Komik olanı bir sebepten olsa gerek Dani dünyanın en etkili ekonomistleri listesinde ilk 100deki iki Türkten biriyken (diğeri Daron Acemoğlu) Deniz Gökçeyi listede göremiyoruz…

             Bu arada Deniz Gökçe kriz bitene kadar tüm dünyanın gördüğü krizi inkar edip duruyordu diye hatıylıyorum…:) Kaldı ki yukarıda dile getirilen iki faktöründe öne sürülmesinde ben de basit gözlemlerle destek görebiliyorum. Alın size Çin ve Brezilya. İkiside (sıcak) sermaye girişinin önünde engeller koyarken büyüme rekorları kırıyor. Çin son dört-beş senedir teknoloji transferi yapmayacak yatırımlara bile engel oluyor. Motor ısınmasın diye belki ama büyüme hızı ortada. Ote yandan kapıları sonuna kadar acan Türkiye’nin ise son 4 yıl ortalaması dünyanın oldukça gerisinde.

Dani’nin ekonomistliğini tartışmaya açmaya zaman harcayacağına googledan şu yukarıda bahsettiğim en iyi ekonomist listesini bul da daha anlamlı veri üzerinden konuşalım…

                   Bu arada sizin yazınızı da çok beğenerek okudum. Sanırım Muhan Soysal günlerce tahtada Tango dersi anlatıp, ayakların hareketlerini gösterip ardından sınav yapacağım diyerek sınav günü tango kasetleri ve teyple gelip, gerçek hayatta da böyledir. Size tahtada anlattıklarımızı gerçekte yapmanız beklenir diyen kişi olsa gerek. 10-15 yıl önce Nokta ya da Aktüel de vardı hikayesi. Bir de efsanevi Risk nedir sorusuna 8-10 sayfa yazanlar değil boş verip te işte budur yanıtı veren öğrencisine tam puan veren hoca diye hatırlıyorum. Tabii ne kadar gerçek ne kadar efsane bilmiyorum. Ama anımsarken yüzümde gülümseme oluyor, içim ısınıyor böyle hocaların varlığından dolayı. İster efsane olsun ister gerçek, bayağı öğretici…
