Pity the mafia that is staging what is probably the most significant political trial in modern Turkey’s history – a show trial in which more than three hundred Turkish military officers stand accused of plotting a military coup back in 2003. Since early 2010, the mafia has produced three different batches of evidence to put the defendants behind bars. Alas, each batch contains such obvious signs of forgery that they seem rather the handiwork of a bunch of crooked Keystone Kops. Naturally the only thing that keeps the trial going is the heavy support of the AKP government and its Gulenist allies.

AKP, Cumhuriyet’i devralıyor
Rejimle dindarlar arasındaki gerilim, Cumhuriyet’i kendi tekeli altına alan kadronun dışlayıcı yönetimiyle ve tepeden inme yüzeysel modernleşme zorlamasıyla ortaya çıktı.

Malum aynı Müslüm Gündüz Fadime Şahin’le de yine Hüseyin Üzmez’in evinde basılmıştı.

The last novel of Umberto Eco, “The Cemetery of Prague”, may help us on this topic. Simone Simonini, the main character of this novel, is an extremely gifted master forger in the employ of various secret services. Simonini is the evil genius creating the most famous forgery in the world: The Protocols of the Elders of Zion. As you know this is the famous fake document that “exposes” a Jewish plot to take over the world. Simonini character in this novel gives us also an opportunity to understand the personality and mind-set of a master political forger.
His main trait of character is very familiar: hate. The strongest motivation of AKP/Gulen crew and their “liberal” supporters (and some of the commentators of this blog) on these show trials.
Eco describes Simonini as ‘the most hateful man in the world’. His maxim is “I hate therefore I am”. He founds “forging a letter that looks genuine, crafting a compromising confession, creating a document that will lead someone to ruin” exhilarating. Again another character in the novel assures one of his friends by stating that “you don’t love someone your whole life,” “but you can hate someone your whole life. Hatred warms the heart”.
Eco also highlights a few very interesting points about political forgery in an interview that is even more enlightening for us regarding the “show trials” in Turkey. He says “The Protocols of the Elders of Zion is an absolutely contradictory text and no intelligent person could take it seriously”. “But many people did”, “Why believe it even more, when you know it’s false?” Eco asks rhetorically. “My opinion is that these pamphlets don’t create prejudice, they reinforce pre-existing prejudices”. “There was a British anti-Semite, Nesta Webster,” says Eco, “who wrote that even though the book may be false, it shows how Jews really think, and so it’s actually true”. (The Inquirer, “Umberto Eco takes on big lies and the human compulsion to hate November 10, 2011, by Tirdad Derakhshani).
Isn’t it so similar to the arguments and mind-set of our “liberal intellectuals”.
By the way… Simonini is not only a genius forger but also an epicure and exhibits a Parisian gastronome’s obsession with exquisite food. Maybe this is the critical difference between a competent forger and our “incompetent” forgers. Who knows, maybe our forgers’ gastronomic obsession is limited with “Maklube”… and maybe that is why their imagination capacity is also so limited.
I wonder if this is the answer to the question on the title of this entry: “Oh, where have all the competent forgers gone?”
